Building community together
What is Co-op Housing?
More than just a house, we're a vibrant community.
Co-operative Housing
involves people joining forces to create and manage affordable housing for themselves, emphasizing community collaboration
and mutual support.
At Sahali Housing Cooperative, we embody the principle of people coming together to provide housing for themselves. In a time when traditional home ownership is becoming increasingly challenging, housing cooperatives offer a practical way to access affordable housing.
As a "continuing" housing cooperative, our model allows members to jointly own the multi-family housing infrastructure while individually leasing their units at cost. This model fosters both community ownership and individual autonomy, making it an attractive option for many seeking a stable and affordable home.

Understanding Housing Co-operatives
A housing co-operative is a non-profit, incorporated cooperative business established by individuals who want to provide and own their housing collectively. Housing co-ops are geared toward assisting low and moderate-income earners.
Governance and Membership Involvement.
The governance of housing co-ops is controlled democratically
by the members who live there, ensuring every member has a voice.
Members are involved in key decisions including:
-
Establishing by-laws that govern the co-op.
-
Approving the annual operating budget.
-
Reviewing and accepting the annual audited financial statements.
Ownership and Financials
In a co-op, units are not owned individually but by the cooperative itself, and they cannot be bought or sold for profit.
This fosters a sense of collective ownership and community pride among members. Housing charges, which cover expenses like the mortgage, capital expenditures, and maintenance, are set to cover costs and may increase as these costs rise.
